The Types of Essential Fatty Acids
There are two main types of EFA:
- the omega-3 fatty acids
- the omega-6 series
Both types are necessary, and might help with a number of different health conditions. The numbers (and 3) indicate the number of carbon atoms on the main chain of the structure. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in a wide range of foods and especially in vegetables and grains. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish, flaxseed and spinach.
One of the main flaws in western diet is the imbalance between the intake of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids. The ideal relationship, according to the European Union, is 4:1, but the average relationship amongst Europeans is 5:1, and in persons who do not eat fish 2 times weekly, the relationship may be 10:1 or even worse, 20:1. This imbalance leads to over expression of harmful eicosanoids in the body, and they enhance the risk of chronic diseases and degeneration.
Processed fats, for example the hydrogenated fats in some margarines, frequently contain trans-fatty acids that increase the level of LDL and decrease the level of HDL and therefore raise the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.
Eicosanoids - friends and enemies
We form eicosanoids from fatty acids in the metabolism. There are bad (pro-inflammatory), neural and favourable (anti-inflammatory) eicosanoids and they compete with each other.
Arachidonic acid (AA), the precursor of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, is released from membrane phospholipids by the action of the enzyme phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)), and is metabolized to prostaglandins (PGs) and leukotrienes (LTs) by the action of cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LO) enzymes, respectively. Disordered activation of PLA(2), LO and COX enzymes have been implicated in many inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. PLA(2) is activated by phospholipase-A(2)-activating protein (PLAP) and LO by 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP). PLA(2) is inactivated by supplementation with EPA, which therefore is useful in a number of neuro-psychiatric conditions, including learning disabilities, ADHD, schizophrenia and depression.
